Rylee Garcia Dies After Car Racing Crash on Interstate 17 in Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ (August 12, 2024) – On Sunday night, 22-year-old Rylee Garcia died in a car racing crash on Interstate 17. 

The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) reports that 22-year-old Rylee Garcia was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle and racing against a Dodge Charger and a Chevrolet Corvette in the southbound lanes of I-17 near Camelback Road at approximately 9:20 p.m.

During the race, Garcia lost control of her motorcycle in the right lane, veered across three lanes, and collided with the concrete median. 

After she fell from the motorcycle, the Charger reportedly struck her and fled the scene before emergency crews arrived.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. In response to the incident, ADOT closed all southbound lanes near the crash site, diverting traffic off the freeway at Camelback Road. 

The freeway was reopened shortly after 5 a.m. on Monday, about eight hours after the crash. 

The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released.
