Driver Involved in 3-Car Crash Dies after Climbing Highway 99 and Struck by Vehicle
ELK GROVE, CA (January 5, 2020) – A woman died after being struck by a car Sunday evening in Elk Grove.
A Toyota Prius got involved in a three-vehicle crash on southbound Highway 99 near Laguna Boulevard around 10:31 p.m.
No one was injured in the initial crash, but the Prius continued to drive with major front-end damage for about half a mile south on the highway.
The car then became disabled near the center median. The female driver exited the vehicle, climbed over the center median, and started to cross northbound traffic on foot for unknown reasons, according to the CHP.
A Honda Civic, driven by a 29-year-old Sacramento man, then struck the Toyota driver in the middle lane of the highway.
CHP officers responded and pronounced the Toyota driver dead at the scene. Authorities identified her as 20-year-old Rubidia Cartagena Albarenga of Sacramento.
The Honda driver remained on scene and cooperated with authorities. He was released and no arrests were made.
Anyone who witnessed either collision is asked to contact the CHP South Sacramento office at 916-681-2300 and ask for Officer Jim Young.
Our deepest condolences and sympathies are with the family and friends of Rubidia Albarenga.
