Ruben Colunga Struck and Killed at Fundraiser in Colton
Colton, CA (July 30, 2020) – In July, 50-year-old Ruben “Reno” Colunga was struck and killed by a truck driver at a fundraiser in Colton.
The family said the fatal incident happened at a fundraiser for a young girl that passed away.
Later, someone was asked to leave the event. As requested, that person left the event, but then returned with others. They began speeding and driving in circles.
Colunga went outside to see what was going on, and just then, the vehicle struck him. Colunga sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision.
The driver immediately fled the scene, though, the authorities eventually caught and identified him as the suspect 29-year-old Roberto Ponciano.
Colunga’s legs had to be amputated because of the injuries. He also had a ruptured spleen and suffered internal bleeding.
“So I went over to him and he looked, he looked fine from his face and everything,” his wife Carrie said.
Moreover, the Colunga family is not new to this kind of tragedy after what happened to their son, professional boxer Izaac Colunga. He was shot and got paralyzed from the neck down after a drive-by shooting at his home last March.
Colunga quitted his job and took care of his son every day since the shooting, the family said.
Meanwhile, 56-year-old Gary Martinez also sustained injuries from the incident. He has set up a GoFundMe with the Colunga family for support.
Police arrested Ponciano without bail and have been scheduled for court today.

The Aftermath of Fatal Accidents
In the case of this fatal car crash, it is crucial that the family of the victim become aware of their rights under the law. This means that they may have a right to file a lawsuit. It could be against a person, or company responsible for the loss of their loved one.
Those closest to the victim may have the right to seek compensation for their loss. Some common examples include funeral expenses, medical bills, and what is called “loss of consortium.” Loss of consortium generally means the deprivation of future affection and companionship over an untimely death.
“The aftermath of tragic accidents can make everything difficult for a family. The last thing most families want to deal with is piles of paperwork, questions from insurance companies or defense attorneys, and attempting to obtain police reports. Grieving and handling legal claims don’t exactly go hand in hand. In this case, hiring an experienced attorney can give you peace of mind that you have a fighter in your corner, someone who will protect your rights and that justice will be served. Having legal representation after such a traumatic event will provide your family the space to heal while ensuring that justice is brought to your loved one,” says Mark Sweet, a seasoned attorney at Sweet Lawyers.
