27-Year-Old Anaheim Man Fatally Injured after Accident with Big Rig
ANAHEIM, CA (March 2, 2018) – A man was killed in a big rig accident on Highway 91, just west of the Imperial Highway, on Saturday evening around 11:40 PM.
The deceased male was identified by the Orange County Coroner’s Office’s Supervising Deputy Coroner Mitch Signal on Sunday, as 27-year-old Roy Michael Sabala of Anaheim.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Sabala was traveling eastbound on the 91 freeway in a Chevrolet Impala, when he swerved to the right and struck a big rig that was parked on the right shoulder.
According to witnesses, the Chevy was winding in and out of the emergency lane before finally slamming into the back of the tanker of a semi-truck that was stalled on the eastbound shoulder, and burst into flames. CHP Sgt. The big rig was partially in the dirt and partially on the asphalt shoulder.
Todd Kovalets said that two good Samaritans stopped to help: they put out the flames with a fire extinguisher and broke the window to try and attempt to remove the man from the car. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency personnel.
Driver of the truck, 64-year-old Martin Buckley, was not injured in the incident. Police continue to investigate the cause of the fatal accident, as it is unclear why Sabala was swerving before the collision. No other information has been provided at this time.
Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Roy Michael Sabala.
