46-Year-Old Highland School District Employee Fatally Injured in Collision on Summitview Road Near Elliot Road
COWICHE, WA (January 19, 2018) – A 46-year old Tieton woman, Rosa Gutierrez-Salcedo, was killed in an accident with a food truck and a Highland School District school bus on the 16,000 block of Summitview Road around 12:37 PM on Friday afternoon.
According to Washington State Patrol Trooper Justin Rumley, the food truck Gutierrez-Salcedo was driving about a half mile south of Cowiche, when it rear-ended a school bus that was stopped to let children off. She was wearing her seat belt, but died on the scene.
It is unknown how many children were on the bus, and no children were getting off at the time of the crash. Only four students sitting in the back of the bus reported minor scrapes and bruises; none of them required medical treatment.
The food truck was totaled, and the school bus sustained minor damages.
Authorities are unsure what caused the crash, and why Gutierrez-Salcedo didn’t stop. Rumley stated that there were no apparent visibility issues, and the lights of the bus worked.
A part of Summitview Rd near Elliot Rd was shut down for about five hours while investigation took place and the road was cleaned up from the wreckage.
Sincere sympathies to the family and loved ones of Rosa Gutierrez-Salcedo. She worked at Marcus Whitman Cowiche Elementary School, and always had a smile on her face. May she rest in peace.
