POMONA, CA (February 4, 2021) – Wednesday afternoon, Rolando Pinto-Mendez, 26, died following a pursuit crash on San Antonio Avenue and Philadelphia Street.
At around 3:51 p.m., officers tried to stop motorist Eli Richard Machado Lopez, 22, at Ninth Street and San Antonio Avenue due to a vehicle code violation.
Pomona Police spokeswoman Aly Mejia confirmed that the driver fled and the chase began.
However, after several minutes, the vehicle crashed into another car on San Antonio Avenue and Philadelphia Street.
“Unfortunately, it was an innocent person inside,” Mejia revealed. As a result, the sole occupant of the vehicle that was hit succumbed to injuries at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver chased by the police escaped on foot. He exited the car and stole a young girl’s bicycle and fled, Mejia added.
