Midland ISD Student Killed in Horrific Traffic Crash on South Lamesa Road
Midland, TX (February 9, 2024) On Thursday afternoon, 41-year-old Rogelio Ortiz was involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash on South Lamesa Road that ultimately killed a Midland ISD student.
According to the Midland Police Department, the horrific traffic crash happened around 4:35 p.m. in the 1900 block of South Lamesa Road.
Reports say that Ortiz was driving a black truck and hit a student trying to cross the road after school.
Officials say that Ortiz fled the scene after the crash, and medics rushed the student to the hospital in critical condition. Officials confirmed that the student ultimately succumbed to their injury and was declared dead at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the City of Midland said officers located and detained Ortiz, the suspected driver of the hit-and-run.
Authorities are investigating the fatal auto-pedestrian crash and have not released further information at this time.
