Rogelio Cortinaz of Abilene Killed in Solo-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 20 [Merkel, TX]

Merkel, TX (June 15, 2024) – 43-year-old Rogelio Cortinaz of Abilene was killed in a solo-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 Friday afternoon.

It was about 2:10 p.m. when the fatal collision happened near Sonic.

A white SUV carrying 3 men was traveling east when it lost control at the top of an embankment and the vehicle rolled into the westbound lanes.

Rogelio Cortinaz was killed at the scene. Officers said he was not wearing a seat belt when the collision happened.

One of the occupants was seriously injured while the third sustained minor injuries.

The medical team rushed the driver to the hospital in stable condition, and another person was taken with minor injuries.

Troopers are still investigating the collision.
