Deadly Orange Auto Accident on Tustin Street and Collins Avenue

ORANGE, CA (October 2, 2024) – Sunday night, Roberto Noe Monfil Xitlama was arrested after brutal DUI crash on Tustin Street.

Reports revealed that the incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Tustin Street and Collins Avenue.

According to the Orange Police Department, an intoxicated driver in a Chevy Equinox was heading south on Tustin Street and ran a red light at Collins Avenue, colliding with a Toyota RAV4 that was traveling west through a green light. The crash claimed the life of 40-year-old Maria Arroyo, a mother of three, who was in the front passenger seat. Her 13-year-old daughter, seated behind her, was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Police stated that two other passengers, including another juvenile and the driver of the RAV4, were also taken to hospitals in serious but stable condition. The driver of the Chevy, 18-year-old Xitlama, was unlicensed and intoxicated, with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and later arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

The local community, including employees at La Reina Markets, where Arroyo was a frequent shopper, expressed their grief over her death. “It’s sad because one day you see her with the kids, and another day she’s gone because of a drunk driver,” said Aurelio Sanchez, an employee at the market.
