42-Year-Old Woman Critically Injured in Bike Accident near Phoebe Street
ENCINITAS, CA (December 8, 2018) – On Saturday morning, a female bicyclist was struck by a truck and injured on North Coast Highway. The victim was later identified as 42-year-old Roberta Walker, an advocate for pedestrian and bicycle safety.
According to Sheriff’s officials, the collision took place shortly after 6:00 AM near Phoebe Street, in front of the Leucadia Post Office. Both Walker and the truck were headed southbound on the highway in a sharrow lane.
There, the two collided, although events leading up to the collision are unclear. Due to the impact, Walker was thrown off her bicycle several feet away from where the initial incident took place.
Upon the arrival of first responders, she was briefly unconscious.
The victim was immediately transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where she was listed in critical condition. Walker reportedly sustained serious injuries to her spine and brain, along with multiple broken bones.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Luis Cruz confirmed that the cyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. Alcohol and drugs were not considered to be contributing factors. Officials believe that the lighting conditions of the road may have made it hard to see, and the area has been known to be unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists.
No further details have been disclosed, as the investigation continues.
