67-Year-Old Man Killed and Others Injured in Accident Near Vermita Bridge
BENTON COUNTY, WA (January 16, 2018) – On Wednesday evening around 5:21 PM, a fatal crash involving four cars was reported by the Washington State Patrol.
Robert Weedmark was driving an SUV west on Highway 24, when he tried to pass a semi-truck and another vehicle in front of him. He passed the double yellow lines, and came into the path of travel of another semi-truck, crashing into it head-on.
Driver of the truck was 56-year-old Ted Trevena. Weedmark’s vehicle swerved and struck another semi-truck, driven by 62-year-old James Brown. Trevena’s vehicle then collided with another car, occupying 60-year-old Gary Hammack. Hammack and Brown were both traveling in front of Weedmark going west on SR 24.
Fire personnel tried to get Weedmark out, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Other injuries were reported.
Three out of the four vehicles involved were totaled.
The road was closed for a few hours for investigation and clean-up of an diesel fuel spill from one of the semi-trucks involved in the crash. Trooper David Wilbur with WSP said that sand was poured over the fuel, so that roads wouldn’t be as slick. Roads reopened by the department of transportation around 11:30 PM that night.
Authorities say that the crash was due to unsafe passing. They are unsure whether or not alcohol and drugs played a role in this fatal accident.
Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Robert Weedmark.
