Robert James and Wyatt Phillips Hospitalized after car accident in Willits
Willits, CA (June 3, 2020) – On Monday, Robert James and Wyatt Phillips sustained injuries in a crash on the SB lane of US-101, while police arrested Brenton Michels.
Police reports say that a red Honda Civic driven by Brenton Michels was traveling on the southbound lane of US-101.
At the same time, a gray Subaru Legacy driven by David Sundberg was behind the Honda at the same speed. Also, traffic reports indicate that a gray Peterbilt cement truck driven by Wyatt Phillips was traveling in the northbound lane.
Suddenly, the Honda wandered on the solid double yellow lines and through the opposite lane. Afterward, Honda had a head-on collision with the Peterbilt. The Honda then swerved blocking the southbound lane.
In addition, the cement truck turned to its right side. It blocked the southbound lane, partially spilling some of the concrete. Reports say that one tire from the truck was removed.
Meanwhile, both lanes were closed at each end of the Willits Bypass and the traffic is diverted to Main Street.
The involved vehicles were removed, debris was also cleared and the CHP continues to investigate the collision.
Accordingly, officials airlifted Michels to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Later he was transferred to UC Davis in Sacramento due to major injuries.
Officials said they arrested Michels for suspicion of DUI by the California Highway Patrol.
Moreover, the Honda passenger, Robert James, experienced moderate injuries. Rescuers took Phillips and James to Howard Memorial Hospital.
Willits PD, Little Lake Fire Dept., MCSO, CalFire, Brooktrails Fire Dept., together with Medstar Ambulance, and Caltrans are some of the offices that responded to the scene.
