72-Year-Old Discovery Bay Man Dies in Head-On Collision near Diablo Way

BRENTWOOD, CA (October 1, 2018) – An elderly man was killed in a car crash on Chestnut Street, mid Monday afternoon. The deceased victim was later identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office as 72-year-old Robert Fellows of Discovery Bay.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal collision took place at approximately 3:20 PM near Diablo Way.

The East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters stated that a green 1998 Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on Chestnut Street, just west of Lavender Farm Lane, when it tried to pass a green 1997 Toyota Tacoma from behind. The Ford was unable to do so, causing a collision between the two vehicles collided. Major damage was sustained in the accident.

The emergency crews said that Fellows and his wife were pinned inside the Toyota. Fellows suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife sustained moderate injuries and was taken by air helicopter to the John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. The Ford’s driver, a 25-year-old Brentwood man, suffered minor injuries and was also transported to John Muir. He is expected to recover.

Both vehicles were totaled. Investigators, who spoke to numerous witnesses on scene, do not believe alcohol or drugs are collision factors. No other information has been disclosed to the public at this time.
