Teen Hospitalized After Crash on Hummel Drive in Orcutt

Orcutt, CA (March 21, 2024) – On Thursday morning, a 16-year-old Righetti High School student sustained critical injuries in a crash on Hummel Drive.

The incident occurred as the teen was walking to school around 7:40 a.m., within a crosswalk at the intersection of Hummel Dr. and Union Valley Parkway in Orcutt. 

The driver admitted to officers that the sun’s glare prevented him from seeing the girl in the crosswalk. 

Additionally, officers reported that two other witnesses confirmed that the glare from the sun affected visibility at that intersection during the time of the accident.

Initially, responders transported the teen to Marian Regional Medical Center, and she was later airlifted to Madera Children’s Hospital for further treatment. 

The California Highway Patrol is actively seeking more witnesses to the accident and encourages anyone with additional information to reach out to the CHP’s Santa Maria area office at (805) 608-6310.
