28-Year-Old Cripple County Man Fatally Injured in Accident with Semi-Truck near State Highway 67
TELLER COUNTY, CO (June, 5, 2018) – A man was killed in a rollover accident on County Road 81, on Tuesday afternoon. He was later identified as 28-year-old Richard Sarmiento of Cripple Creek.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, the fatal collision happened just after 2:00 PM, near State Highway 67. A 2017 International semi-truck was attempting to pull into a private driveway, with an impatient Ford F-350 pickup driver behind.
The driver, 31-year-old Leslie Karpinski-Hobbs of McCalla, Alabama, accelerated her vehicle and tried to pass the semi pulling a trailer, crashing into it. The Ford rolled over off the road, ejected both Karpinsa ki-Hobbs and Sarmiento, who was sitting as a passenger. Both occupants sustained life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Karpinski-Hobbs survived, although there is no current update on her condition. Sarmiento later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The semi-truck driver, 60-year-old Volie Pylie of Woodland Park, was not injured in the accident.
Officials continue to investigate the fatal collision, and are looking into speed as a main factor. They do not believe that drugs or alcohol were involved, and noted that neither person in the Ford was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
No further details have been disclosed to the public at this time.
Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved loved ones of Richard Sarmiento. May he rest in peace.
