66-Year-Old San Clemente Man Dies after Boat Collision near Southern Maritime Border
SAN DIEGO, CA (October 26, 2018) – A man was killed Friday evening following a boat crash off the coast of Imperial Beach. The victim was later identified as 66-year-old Richard Neff, a resident of San Clemente.
As per reports, the incident took place shortly before 8:00 PM. Fishermen on the Prowler, a 65-foot sport-fisher, were on their way back from Mexican Waters when the boat collided with the Attessa IV, a 332-foot yacht.
The impact of the crash caused extensive damage to the starboard side of the sports fishing boat, disabling it and critically injuring the victim. Neff was later airlifted to UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, where he was pronounced dead at 10:24 PM.
A 45-foot response boat transferred 17 passengers, including two others who were injured, from the damaged fishing boat back to San Diego. Further updates on the survivors’ current medical conditions were not provided. Meanwhile, the remaining 10 passengers returned to San Diego aboard the Attessa IV.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fatal collision and to identify possible contributing factors. Additional information will be released once it becomes available.
