Pilot and Pet Fatally Injured after Plane Accident near Placer Street
REDDING, CA (August 29, 2018) – A man and his dog were killed late Wednesday morning following a small plane crash near Placer Street. The victim was later identified as 71-year-old Richard Joseph Engel of Shingletown.
As per reports, the accident took place shortly after 11:00 AM near the Benton Airpark. A Cessna 150 pulled up at takeoff when it went down in a gully and landed in the ravine at the north end of the airpark.
Homeowners near the area rushed to the scene and attempted to render aid to Engel and his pet dog. However, they noticed that the occupants of the plane were unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency crews arrived and pronounced the pilot dead after suffering major injuries.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and to identify possible contributing factors. The National Transportation Safety Board is also expected to investigate the incident. No additional information has been disclosed to the public at this time.
