Ricardo Chavez Hospitalized after Head-On DUI Crash on Santa Fe Drive in Merced

Merced, CA (July 28, 2022) – Tuesday evening, 66-year-old Ricardo Chavez from Ceres sustained injuries in a head-on crash on Santa Fe Drive.

Subsequently, police arrested 46-year-old Luis Chacon Dominguez from Atwater on suspicion of felony DUI causing bodily injury and hit and run causing injury.

The head-on crash in Merced happened at 6:05 p.m. on July 26 near Santa Fe Drive just west of Olive Avenue.

CHP said the collision involved two vehicles, a 2017 Nissan van and a 2002 Ford Mustang.

Reportedly, Dominguez was driving a 2002 Ford Mustang east on Santa Fe Drive when for unknown reasons he allowed the vehicle to cross into the oncoming lane colliding head-on with a 2017 Nissan van driven west along Santa Fe Drive.

Authorities said the collision caused the Nissan to overturn and catch fire. Luckily, good Samaritans helped Chavez as the vehicle engulfed in flames.

EMS took Chavez to Mercy Medical Center Merced for treatment of severe non-life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, Dominguez attempted to fled from the scene but arrested shortly after.

Currently, Chacon Dominguez is booked into Merced County Jail.
