Santa Maria Man Ricardo Alonso Dies in Interstate 5 Big Rig Crash [Merced County, CA]

Merced County, CA (March 9, 2024) – Ricardo Alonso, a 26-year-old Santa Maria man, lost his life in an Interstate 5 big rig crash early Tuesday morning.

CHP—Los Baños officers responded to the traffic accident on the northbound freeway south of Henry Miller Avenue at 3 a.m.

Investigators said a 2021 Kenworth big rig driven by 28-year-old Gurjant Singh of Elk Grove was northbound on the same freeway in the number two lane.

Singh was approaching Henry Miller Avenue when the big rig drove onto the right shoulder and rear-ended a parked 2012 Kenworth big rig.

Alonso, the driver of the parked Kenworth big rig, was standing next to the big rig and trailer when the accident happened.

The collision caused the parked big rig to move and strike Alonso.

Unfortunately, Alonso sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision. 

Singh, on the other hand, was taken to a Modesto hospital with major injuries. 

In the meantime, the authorities are investigating if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
