Joel Patrick Williamson Izzett Arrested after DUI Wrong-Way Crash on US 60 in Phoenix
Phoenix, AZ (June 30, 2023) – Tuesday afternoon, Rhonda Burton died, and Doug Burton sustained critical injuries in a DUI wrong-way crash on US 60.
The fatal DUI wrong-way crash on US 60 in Phoenix happened around 3:30 p.m. on May 30.
AZDPS said Izzett was heading east on U.S. 60 when he crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with Doug and Rhonda Burton’s car.
Rhonda died at the crash scene while Doug was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Meanwhile, Izzett was also taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Debris from the collision hit three other cars.
Izzett was impaired, which was evident from the smell of alcohol and his bloodshot eyes. Beer bottles were also found in his car, and he admitted to smoking meth the day before. The speedometer needle on the car he was driving had stopped at 75 miles per hour. There is a 55-mile zone in that stretch of U.S. 60.
On Thursday, Izzett was released from a Chandler hospital and jailed on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, property damage, and 10 counts of endangerment.
According to court documents, Izzett was homeless and said he was on his way out of state to enroll in a rehab center when the accident happened.
