Woman and Grandchildren Fatally Injured in Two-Car Collision near Taglio Road
MERCED COUNTY, CA (July 17, 2018) – Three people were killed early Tuesday morning and two others were hospitalized after a big rig rear-ended a vehicle on Interstate 5.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place shortly after 2:00 AM near Taglio Road. 56-year-old Ontario resident Braulio Martinez was northbound on Interstate 5 when he failed to stop for slow traffic that was due to an unrelated incident.
Martinez’s 2011 Freightliner slammed into the back of a 2012 Dodge Caravan, driven by 57-year-old Regina Dorado of Covina. The impact pushed the vehicle into the center median.
Dorado and her two grandchildren – a 6-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl – sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. Her other grandchild, a 6-year-old girl, was airlifted to the Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera after suffering major injuries. A fifth occupant, identified as 19-year-old Raylene Valencia, was transported to Memorial Hospital in Modesto with minor injuries.
No other information has been released to the public at this time.
