Rayleen Vasquez Dead,  Fredy Portillo Arrested After Hit-And-Run Crash on State Road 267 in Clovis

Clovis, NM (December 5, 2024) – On Wednesday, 22-year-old Rayleen Vasquez of Santa Rosa died in a hit-and-run crash on State Road.

Authorities arrested a Roosevelt County resident, Fredy Portillo, 31, on Wednesday and charged him with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

According to court records, Portillo is believed to have been driving a silver Chevrolet pickup truck that collided head-on with a gray Nissan sport utility vehicle at the intersection of State Road 267 and South Roosevelt Road V on Tuesday night.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as 22-year-old Rayleen Vasquez of Santa Rosa, died at the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing the pickup’s driver fleeing the crash with a small child. New Mexico State Police discovered a Honduran passport with Portillo’s name inside the pickup, leading them to identify him as the suspect.

On Wednesday afternoon, the child’s mother brought the 2-year-old boy to Roosevelt General Hospital, where medical staff found he had a broken arm and bruises on his face and body.

The mother provided police with information about Portillo’s location.

Officers arrested Portillo without incident, and he was detained at the Roosevelt County Detention Center as of Thursday.

An NMSP spokesperson confirmed the incident remains under investigation, adding that a full report will not be available for a few weeks.

State Police have declined to release additional details about the deceased woman at this time.

Sweet Lawyers extend our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of Rayleen Vasquez. May the bereaved find solace and strength in this extremely trying time.
