5-Year-Old Boy Dies in Ramona Head-On Crash
RAMONA, CA (December 24, 2018) – A child was killed following a head-on crash Monday morning in Ramona, authorities said.
The fatal crash happened around 11:06 a.m. on Highway 78 at West Haverford Road.
According to reports, a 44-year-old Ramona man was driving a white 2002 Toyota Camry on westbound Highway 78. At the same time, a 77-year-old man from Falls City, Oregon was driving a 2014 Dodge Ram on eastbound Highway 78.
The Camry sedan suddenly swerved in front of the truck, colliding it head-on.
Two boys in the Camry were seating in the rear-passenger seats, both were wearing seat belts. One of them, a 5-year-old boy, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at scene.
The other child, a 6-year-old boy, suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
The driver of the Camry, who appears to be the uncle of the two boys, was also seriously injured. His female front passenger, who appears to be the mother of the two boys, survived the crash.
The driver of the Dodge truck was transported to an area hospital to be treated for his injuries.
The California Highway Patrol is still working on identifying the parties involved.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol and drugs have not been ruled out as possible contributing factors.
