Crash on Santan Motorplex Kills Officer Christopher Farrar, Injures Officer Rico Aranda
Gilbert, AZ (May 01, 2021) – On Thursday, officer Christopher Farrar died and officer Rico Aranda was injured in a rash on Santan Motorplex.
The incident started at 10 p.m. on State Route 87 near Eloy.
A deputy from Pinal County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Jonathon Altland. Instead, Altland continued driving and fled shots at the officer.
He continued into the Chandler area and busted through the Chandler Airport gates. Subsequently, Altland drove onto the runway and prompted a closure of the airport at 10:39 P.M.
Furthermore, Altland drove the wrong way on Loop 202 Santan Freeway and crashed near the Santan Motorplex.
He ditched the crashed vehicle and stole a vehicle from the dealership. Then, he attempted to flee in the stolen vehicle and struck two officers and a dealership employee.
Apparently, Altland was able to enter the building through an open roll-up door of the dealership.
At that moment, officers from Gilbert, Chandler, Pinal County, and DPS surrounded the building.
Three PCSO deputies and four DPS troopers fired shots at Altland at around 11 p.m. as he crashed a stolen vehicle through a closed bay door. Officers said Altland attempted to run them over.
Afterward, Altland struck Farrar and a parked vehicle that struck Aranda.
Officer Farrar, died from his injuries while Officer Aranda sustained a serious head injury. He is in critical but stable condition. Also, he is showing signs of improvement.
Moreover, three officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety sustained injuries during the incident. Along with the dealership employee, the officers were taken to a hospital.
The authorities arrested Altland and transported him to a local hospital with non-fatal injuries.
Altland faces murder, aggravated assault, and auto theft charges.
