Driver Arrested after Stolen Car Crash on El Segundo Boulevard near Prairie Avenue
HAWTHORNE, CA (June 27, 2019) – Authorities arrested a suspected DUI driver after a police chase ended in a crash on El Segundo Boulevard, Thursday morning.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the incident started at about 7:00 AM. Officers received a call from the suspect that he had been drinking and carried a knife that he might use to hurt himself.
When responders reached his location, the suspect fled the area in a Honda Accord and entered 105 Freeway, prompting a chase. Then, the suspect exited the freeway and drove onto surface streets.
A short time later, the suspect collided with a vehicle at Crenshaw and El Segundo boulevards. He stopped momentarily but fled again, prompting another chase.
At 7:20 AM, the speeding vehicle hit a curb, lost control, and rear-ended another vehicle on Prairie Avenue. Officers immediately surrounded the vehicle and shot out the windows of the car with beanbags. At first, the suspect refused to step out of the vehicle. But shortly before 7:30 AM, he surrendered and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The suspect will face charges of felony evading and driving under the influence once released from the hospital. Meanwhile, the drivers of the other vehicles sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
