Hazmat Situation Occurred After Plane Crash on Balboa Avenue
San Diego, CA (September 26, 2020) – A small plane crash occurred on Balboa Avenue that left two passengers injured on Thursday afternoon.
The plane crashed at around 4:30 p.m. on 8600 Balboa Avenue, east of Kearny Villa Road.
The San Diego Police Department and San Diego Fire Department responded to the scene and said emergency crews transported two passengers to Sharp Memorial Hospital.
According to SDFD Battalion Chief Dan Eddy, shortly after taking off from the airport, the plane attempted to make an emergency landing. However, it couldn’t reach the runway.
Eddy said that the pilot was able to avoid hitting a Kyocera building in Balboa Avenue thus, it crash-landed in the parking lot behind the building.
There are high voltage areas in the back of the building such as fuel cell areas and hazardous materials. If it wasn’t avoided, it could have caused major damage, Eddy said.
Eddy commended his crew for being able to extricate the passengers in the plane in less than 10 minutes.
22-year-old Jasmine Linden, working as a temperature scanner at the Kyocera building said that the humming of aircraft did not sound normal. She and another man rushed inside to check on the pilot and the passengers.
Eddy was unable to identify any injuries by the two victims and said that his concern mostly was the internal injuries possibly sustained.
