1 Dead in Alameda County Car Accident
ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA (January 25, 2019) – A driver of a pickup truck was killed after crashing into the back of a big rig on the Altamont Pass on January 24.
The incident, which occurred around 5:30 a.m. where 205 Freeway splits from eastbound 580 Freeway, led to the closure of two lanes on southbound 205 Freeway until approximately 8:30 a.m. after the CHP issued a SigAlert due to severe traffic.
The identity of the deceased is yet to be released.
CHP spokesman Officer Tyler Hahn revealed that alcohol was ruled out as a factor in the collision. The initial investigated determined that the pickup struck the semi’s rear at a fast speed.
“He came up on the semi at a pretty good clip. We don’t know what the speed of the big rig was, so it may have been slowing down or stopped. We’re not sure. But we think the driver didn’t notice that the big rig was slowing down,” Hahn stated.
The driver of the big rig was reportedly unharmed.
Meanwhile, the 205 Freeway junction at 580 Freeway was shut down and rerouted eastbound traffic to Patterson Pass Road during the three hours after the collision.
