Woman Struck and Killed by Car after Car Collision on 5 Freeway
CHICO, CA (February 22, 2018) – Three people were injured in a car crash involving multiple vehicles and an intoxicated driver on Mangrove Avenue and Vallombrosa Avenue on Thursday.
According to Chico police, 30-year-old Phillip Wampler of Willows was headed west on Vallombrosa at between 40 and 50 mph just after 5:00 PM. Wampler sideswiped a car that was stopped at the red light and then crashed into two other cars making a left turn from Vallombrosa onto Mangrove.
Wampler’s minivan went airborne and crashed into an SUV that was stopped on Vallombrosa. One of the cars hit in the intersection was almost torn in half, and the other was totaled.
Wampler and two other drivers were rushed to Enloe Medical Center, but the others were not seriously injured. The other individuals involved were reportedly from Chico, Yuba City, Durham, and Red Bluff.
Police obtained a warrant for a blood test to be administered on Wampler. Officials said a complaint will be filed with the Butte County District Attorney’s Office against Wampler for driving under the influence.
