One Dead and One Injured in Solo-Car Accident near McKinley Avenue
FRESNO, CA (March 14, 2018) – A 26-year-old Fresno man was killed and his passenger critically injured in a solo-car accident on the Highway 168 off-ramp to McKinley Avenue.
The crash took place on Wednesday evening, just before midnight. Witnesses saw the vehicle exit the highway at high speeds and claim that the driver did not use his brake to slow down.
According to Fresno Police Captain Mike Reid, the Honda Accord ran a red light at the off-ramp, at about 80 miles per hour. It then crossed all four lanes of Mckinley, struck an embankment on the south side, and went airborne. After flying by a six-foot tall chain link fence and nearby power lines, the Accord landed in a tree about 12 feet off the ground, before landing on its roof in a backyard.
The residential home was not hit by the car. Police officials say that the family inside was saved by the tree.
Both occupants were pinned inside of the car. Firefighters used heavy machinery to extricate the men. Phalahn Los was pronounced dead on the scene. His passenger, a 25-year-old male, was transported to the Community Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
Officials are waiting on a toxicology report to determine if drugs and alcohol were contributing factors in this fatal crash.
Sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Phalahn Lor. May he rest in peace.
