Peter Van Ginkel Killed in Fiery Crash on 10 Freeway in Pomona

57-Year-Old Upland Man ID’ed in Accident on San Bernardino Freeway West of Dudley Avenue

 
POMONA, CA (April 7, 2018) – A man was killed in a fiery two-car collision on the eastbound San Bernardino (10) Freeway, early Saturday morning. The victim was identified by the coroner’s Lt Larry Dietz as 57-year-old Peter Van Ginkel, a resident of Upland.
 
CHP officials first received calls from other drivers about a vehicle parked on the highway, and later got reports of a car on fire in the same area.
 
The accident took place around 3:10 AM, just west of Dudley Avenue. Ginkel was driving in a 1994 Toyota Tercel, when he hit the center divider. His vehicle was parked between the carpool lane and left through lane with its lights off, when it was hit by a 2004 Mitsubishi Montero.
 
The 28-year-old driver stated that he did not see the disabled vehicle until it was too late. He administered his brakes and swerved in an attempt to avoid colliding with the Toyota. According to Sgt LR Borunda, the Mitsubishi struck the left side of the Toyota.
 
Upon impact, the Toyota burst into flames, making it impossible for Ginkel to get out; he was pronounced dead on the scene by responders. The other driver and three other people sustained minor injuries and were not hospitalized. The Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson stated that it is unclear whether the three other individuals were occupants of the Toyota or Mitsubishi.
 
Officials shut down the eastbound lanes of the 10 Highway during investigation. No other information has been released at this time.
