Modesto Man Dies in Morning Collision Involving Semi Trucks on Highway 99 at Arch Road
STOCKTON, CA (January 8, 2019) – A man was killed following a semi truck crash Tuesday morning in Stockton, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The fatal crash happened around 5:06 a.m. on northbound Highway 99, just South of Arch Road.
According to the CHP, a disabled 2012 Peterbilt silage truck was parked on the shoulder of the northbound lanes of the highway, partially blocking the right lane. At the same time, a 2013 Peterbilt semi truck was approaching from behind at about 55 mph.
The Peterbilt semi was being followed by 2017 International semi truck, which was traveling at an unknown rate of speed.
The Peterbilt slowed down and moved to the left to accommodate the disabled silage truck, but the International did not reduce its speed.
The International truck collided with the right rear of the Peterbilt’s trailer, then veered to the right and collided with the right rear of the silage truck.
The driver of the International truck, identified as a 36-year-old Pedro Avila of Modesto, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.
The right and center lanes of the highway were blocked, bringing traffic to a near standstill into Manteca.
Caltrans arrived on scene at about 6 a.m. and closed both the Arch Road on-and off-ramps.
All northbound lanes of Highway 99 were re-opened just after 11:00 a.m.
It is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
