Distracted Driver Rosario Valdezinda Arrested after Killing Yong Kim with Car in Los Angeles Pedestrian Accident
LOS ANGELES, CA (January 25, 2019) – A 65-year-old pedestrian in a marked crosswalk died after being hit by a female driver on January 23.
The incident was reported around 8:00 p.m. on Sixth Street at Grand View Street, just north of MacArthur Park.
Reports revealed that 38-year-old Rosario Valdezinda was traveling in an SUV east on 6th Street when she hit the pedestrian, who was running across the street in a marked crosswalk. He was said to be attempting to catch a bus in the area.
LAPD Detective Supervisor Moses Castillo said, “The impact threw him at least 30 to 50 feet. He suffered some severe head trauma, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Police believed that Valdezinda was scanning messages on her phone when the incident happened. She remained at the area and attempted to aid the 65-year-old Yong Do Kim who was living in a nearby assisted living facility.
Castillo identified that the pedestrian “darted out” onto the crosswalk while trying to catch a bus. However, the surveillance video revealed that Kim had crossed two lanes of westbound traffic and one eastbound lane before the SUV hit him in the No. 2 eastbound lane.
“The message here today is if you’re running to try to catch the bus … it’s not worth it. Slow down, pay attention, be safe. If you miss this bus, there’s always another one coming right behind it,” Castillo advised.
According to Castillo, the female driver remained at the area and “did the right thing” by trying to help and being cooperative with police.
LAPD revealed that the incident was a result of “distracted driving.”
Valdezinda was detained on suspicion of driving without a valid license but was eventually also booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.
Valdezinda’s bail was set at $100,000, and she will be arraigned on January 28.
