One Dead after Indio Pedestrian Accident on 10 Freeway
INDIO, CA (February 12, 2019) – A pedestrian sustained fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Indio on Saturday, February 9.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened at around 2:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes of 10 Freeway, west of Jackson Street.
Investigators said that a motorist driving a 2009 Honda struck a large unknown object within the lanes of traffic.
The driver notified the officials from home. It was not yet known how much time passed before officials were contacted. However, the CHP’s traffic log on Saturday showed that the freeway was closed starting at 3:15 a.m.
CHP officers rushed to the scene and discovered the pedestrian, who died at the scene. The person’s identity was not immediately available.
Officers closed westbound 10 Freeway for about three hours during the investigation, CHP said. They redirected the traffic onto Jackson and then toward Monroe Street, where they got back onto the freeway.
Investigators are trying to figure out why the person was on the freeway. Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact (760) 772-5300.
