Man Hospitalized after Collision with Big Rig near San Onofre
OCEANSIDE, CA (July 31, 2018) – A pedestrian was hospitalized late Tuesday evening after he was struck by a big rig on Interstate 5 near San Onofre.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision took place shortly before 11:30 PM. A man was driving a Hyundai sedan when it collided with a big rig. The impact caused the Hyundai to roll over and come to a rest down an embankment.
The driver of the Hyundai exited his vehicle, walked back up the embankment, and returned to the freeway. He was walking near the slow lane on southbound I-5 when a second big rig hit him.
The 34-year-old man was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with major injuries. His identity, city of residence, and current condition were not immediately available. Meanwhile, both big rig drivers stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Alcohol and drugs were ruled out as possible contributing factors in the crash. An investigation is ongoing to determine what might have caused the collision. No additional information has been released to the public at this time.
