Fatal Pedestrian and Train Crash on North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas
ENCINITAS, CA (May 18, 2019) – A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a train Saturday evening in Encinitas.
Dispatchers received calls just before 9:00 p.m. An Amtrak crew reported having struck a person on the tracks in the area of North Coast Highway 101 and Jason Street.
The unidentified pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene due to the impact of the collision.
The North County Transit District, which operates Coaster trains, said the Padres train scheduled to leave the Santa Fe Depot in downtown San Diego at 10:08 p.m. would halt in Encinitas.
Buses will take passengers to the Poinsettia Station in Carlsbad, where they can pick up a train again to Oceanside.
The death of the victim may have been a suicide, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s official. Further investigation of this incident is underway.
