Pedestrian Struck and Killed by 2 Vehicles on Redondo Avenue in Long Beach
LONG BEACH, CA (September 27, 2019) — A pedestrian died after two vehicles struck him on Redondo Avenue Thursday morning.
The Long Beach police said the incident occurred south of 11th Street at about 6:30 a.m. A video obtained from a nearby smoke shop showed that the man was crossing Redondo Avenue with a bicycle. He was headed east but stopped to watch for northbound traffic.
The man was standing in the middle of the street when a southbound 2017 red Chevrolet Equinox struck him. The force of the impact launched the man into the number one lane of northbound traffic.
The police said at least one driver saw the man lying in the middle of the road but went around him. However, a gray 2008 Honda Civic struck the pedestrian who died at the scene.
The Los Angeles County Coroner withheld the identity of the victim pending notification of the family.
Meantime, both drivers of the vehicles involved remained at the scene.
The crash led to the closure of Redondo Avenue at 11th Street for over three hours. The intersection reopened at about 10 a.m.
The police did not believe that intoxication and cellphone distraction were factors in the collision. They said the victim may have been crossing the street illegally. In addition, low light conditions of the early morning may have also contributed to the incident.
The police ask anyone with information to contact Detective Allen Duncan at 562-570-7355.
We offer our most heartfelt sympathies to the loved ones of the victim.
