54-Year-Old Trucker Dies when His Big Rig Overturns on Highway 76 in Pauma Valley
PAUMA VALLEY, CA (March 14, 2019) – A trucker was killed and a man riding with him was injured when a big rig crashed and overturned Thursday morning on a winding rural road in Pauma Valley.
The fatal crash happened around 8:10 a.m. on Highway 76 near Rincon Ranch Road, a few miles southwest of Palomar Mountain State Park.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2005 Peterbilt flatbed tractor-trailer, which was hauling bags of landscaping mulch, was traveling down the grade at a high rate of speed when he lost control while trying to navigate a curve.
The tractor-trailer then overturned into a roadside ditch near Rincon Ranch Road, leaving the trucker and his passenger, both from Indio, trapped inside the mangled cab.
The 54-year-old driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately available pending family notification.
His 55-year-old passenger was extricated by emergency crews and flown to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with minor injuries.
The accident forced lane closures in the area until around 2:30 p.m.
Investigation of this incident is still ongoing.
