Patrick McHaley Killed in Modesto Crash on 8th Street, Paul Muratore Arrested
MODESTO, CA (September 3, 2020) – On Tuesday, 42-year-old Patrick McHaley suffered injuries in a hit-and-run accident on 8th Street.
The incident occurred at around 8:45 p.m. on 8th Street and L Street. According to reports, the police responded after receiving a report of an auto-pedestrian crash.
Upon their arrival, they located the victim on the ground. Responders transported him to a hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, Modesto Police Sergeant Lance Nicolai said that Mr. McHaley crossed the street from corner to corner in an unmarked crosswalk. Sergeant Nicolai added that motorists are required to yield to pedestrians at such intersections.
As the pedestrian crossed, a westbound vehicle on the inside lane stopped. Meanwhile, a smaller sized dark-colored pickup truck driving behind the first vehicle veered around and went back into the inside lane, hitting the pedestrian.
The impact threw the pedestrian to the curb on L Street. Meanwhile, the pickup truck headed west on L Street, before making a turn north on 7th and fleeing.
Medical responders administered CPR and managed to regain a pulse. Then, they took the Modesto resident to the hospital.
Shortly after, authorities revealed that Patrick McHaley did not survive his injuries.
Moreover, the traffic investigators and crime scene technicians also came to collect evidence and assist in the investigation.
The authorities later located the suspect driver, 67-year-old Paul Muratore. Police booked him for vehicular homicide and felony hit-and-run.
How to Proceed from Fatal Accidents in Modesto
In today’s current state of affairs, taking strolls outdoors is becoming the new normal. With this, the likelihood of accidents involving pedestrians increases.
Car accidents are far more common than pedestrian accidents. However, there is still reason to be wary when traveling on foot.
“Pedestrian accidents do not occur as much as motor vehicle accidents. However, the pedestrian accidents tend to include more serious injuries,” Tyler Toomey said. He is a practicing attorney at Sweet Lawyers.
“Some of the worst pedestrian incidents involve minors. It’s because they are sometimes hard to see. They also ride bikes, skateboards, etc. Pedestrian incidents usually occur in shopping center entrances and street corners,” he added.
