Box Truck Rear-Ends Transit Bus on 80 Freeway in San Francisco Killing One
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 29, 2019) – A passenger was killed when the driver of a box truck rear-ended a transit bus early Wednesday morning.
The crash happened around 4:27 a.m. on westbound 80 Freeway at Treasure Island Road.
A Golden Gate Transit bus on route 705 was headed from BART’s MacArthur Station toward San Francisco when it was rear-ended by the box truck, according to reports.
The box truck landed on its side, trapping the driver inside the vehicle, officials said. One male passenger in the box truck was pronounced dead the scene.
The box truck driver and a second male passenger were taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Two bus passengers complained of pain and were also hospitalized.
Multiple lanes were shut down, backing up East Bay commute traffic for miles, authorities said. The box truck was uprighted around 7:30 a.m. and all lanes were re-opened before noon.
Speed is being looked at as a possible factor in the on-going investigation.
