Passenger Killed and Christopher Carrillo Arrested after Fatal Solo Crash near Hellyer Avenue
SAN JOSE, CA (May 25, 2019) – Authorities identified 21-year-old Orlando Sanchez of Castro Valley as the passenger killed in a DUI crash on Highway 101.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened near Hellyer Avenue, shortly after 3:00 AM. A southbound 2003 Toyota Corolla approached the Hellyer overcrossing when it lost control and went off the roadway. Then, it went up the embankment and slammed into the overcrossing.
The Toyota driver, identified as 20-year-old Christopher Carrillo of San Jose, suffered minor injuries in the crash. Authorities later arrested him on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter. Sanchez, who was a passenger in the wrecked vehicle, died at the scene.
An investigation is ongoing to determine other possible contributing factors. Additional information will be released once it becomes available.
