Oralia Garza Dies in Tragic Traffic Crash on FM 509 [Harlingen, TX]

Harlingen, TX (November 20, 2024) On Friday afternoon, a fatal crash in Harlingen, claimed the life of 77-year-old Oralia Garza of San Benito.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the deadly collision happened at about 1:27 p.m. on FM 509, south of FM 800 in Harlingen.

Reports say that a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by a male driver, was traveling southbound on FM 509 as it approached a curve. A black 2021 Hyundai Kona, occupied by a female driver and male passenger, was traveling northbound.

Authorities say that the Chevrolet was speeding and attempted to pass a semi-truck in a no-passing zone. In trying to avoid a collision with the Hyundai, the Chevrolet swerved back into its lane but struck the rear left side of the semi-truck. The impact sent the Chevrolet into the northbound lane, where it collided with the Hyundai.

Meanwhile, the drivers and passengers of both vehicles sustained life-threatening injuries and were transported to Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.

The Hyundai driver, 77-year-old Oralia Garza of San Benito, succumbed to her injuries the following day. Both the Hyundai passenger and the Chevrolet driver remain in critical condition.

DPS Troopers are continuing their investigation into this fatal crash.
