Wrong-Way Driver Dies in Head-On Crash on Highway 99 in Lebec
LEBEC, CA (August 8, 2019) – One person died following a wrong-way crash Thursday afternoon in Lebec.
Around 3:11 p.m., CHP received a call of a wrong way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 99. Shortly after, a traffic crash was reported involving three vehicles on southbound 5 Freeway near Laval Road.
Deputies of the CHP Fort Tejon Area Office responded to the scene and determined it was a head-on crash resulting to one fatality.
According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of a maroon 2012 Honda Civic was traveling the wrong way in the fast lane of Highway 99 at 60 mph, when he collided head-on with a white Nissan Armada. A Range Rover then got involved following the initial crash.
As a result, the unidentified driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene.
All lanes of Highway 99 were closed for approximately 2 hours and 20 mins. The crash is still under investigation and alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor.
