Drowsy Driving Leads of Fatal Crash on 80 Freeway in Berkeley
BERKELEY, CA (November 18, 2019) – One person was killed following a rear-end crash Monday morning in Berkeley, authorities said.
The crash happened around 5:16 a.m. on 80 Freeway, just east of Gilman Street off-ramp.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a car was disabled in one of the center lanes, when another vehicle crashed into it from behind.
Officials said the driver of the second vehicle may have been drowsy or falling asleep, and did not see the disabled car until it was too late.
As a result of the crash, the driver of the disabled car died at the scene. Authorities did not release the identity of the victim pending next of kin notification.
The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries.
The crash closed down several lanes of the freeway until after 8:00 a.m.
CHP officials are still working on this fatal incident and urging witnesses to come forward with information.
