8-Vehicle Pileup On 5 Freeway in Arleta Kills 1 and Leaves Another in Critical Condition
ARLETA, CA (May 26, 2019) – One person was killed following a multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in Arleta, authorities said.
The fatal cash happened around 4:19 a.m. on southbound 5 Freeway at Van Nuys Boulevard, and involved at least eight vehicles.
Crews had to extricate several patients from at least one vehicle, according to officials. Two people were found unconscious in their vehicles. Three children in one of the vehicles escaped injury.
A total of three people were transported to an area hospital. One of them did not survive and was declared dead.
Another patient was listed in critical condition, while the third was in fair condition.
A Sigalert was issued at 4:47 a.m., closing the first, second, third and carpool lanes as well as the Van Nuys Boulevard onramp for an unknown duration, the CHP said. Eventually, all southbound lanes were closed at 5:48 a.m., with traffic being diverted to the eastbound 118 Freeway.
No identifying information is being released at this time. Further investigation is underway.
