Car Catches Fire after Rear-Ended by Big Rig on 5 Freeway in Oceanside Killing the Driver
OCEANSIDE, CA (October 14, 2019) – One person was killed following a fiery rear-end crash Monday morning on southbound 5 Freeway in Oceanside.
The crash happened just after 5:00 a.m. near the Aliso Creek rest area.
According to the CHP, the driver of a sedan stopped in the slow lane of the freeway when a Vons tractor-trailer slammed into the back of the car. The impact pushed the sedan into the center divider and burst into flames.
Arriving firefighters extinguished the fire and found a dead body inside the vehicle. CHP did not release further details about the victim and said an investigation was underway with the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The driver of the big rig, a 55-year-old South Gate man, was not injured.
The crash closed all southbound lanes of the freeway for about an hour. All lanes reopened around 10:30 a.m.
