Fuel Tanker Truck Explodes on Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe Killing the Driver
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CA (September 7, 2019) – One person was killed following a fiery big rig crash Saturday morning in South Lake Tahoe, city officials said.
The crash happened around 11:45 a.m. on Highway 50 at Elks Club Drive, near the flea market.
According to the CHP, a fuel tanker truck was traveling eastbound when it collided with several other vehicles. The big rig then overturned and exploded. The flames spread into a nearby vegetation.
The big rig driver was declared dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released pending family notification.
Another driver suffered major injuries and was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.
Officials closed Highway 50 in both directions while hazmat teams cleaned up the area.
Investigation of this fatal crash is ongoing.
