Driver Dies after Crashing Back of Big Rig on 5 Freeway in Castaic
CASTAIC, CA (August 14, 2019) – A driver was killed after ramming into the rear of a big rig then exploding into flames Wednesday morning on 5 Freeway in Castaic.
Authorities began receiving calls about a pickup truck hitting the rear of the big rig along the northbound lanes of 5 Freeway north of Hasley Canyon Road at 5:37 a.m.
Officers arrived to find the pickup truck wedged beneath the trailer of the big rig.
The pickup truck burst into flames with the driver still inside, authorities said. Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire in about 10 minutes, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased was not immediately available.
The driver of the big rig was not injured.
The crash closed all northbound lanes of the freeway, causing severe traffic congestion for commuters. Authorities gradually reopened lanes to traffic just before 11:00 a.m.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
