Driver Dies after Crashing into Big Rig on 5 Freeway in Buttonwillow
BUTTONWILLOW, CA (December 5, 2019) – A driver died after crashing into a big rig Thursday morning in Buttonwillow.
The crash happened around 5:08 p.m. on northbound 5 Freeway, a quarter mile past the Buttonwillow rest area.
According to the California Highway Patrol, a late-model Kia sedan was traveling on the freeway in heavy fog when it slammed into the back of the big rig. It then veered into a fence off the right side of the road.
As a result, the Kia’s driver died at the scene. The identity of the deceased was not immediately available pending next of kin notification.
The driver of the big rig was not injured.
Images from a Bakersfield TV station show the roof peeled off the car and pieces of the bumper strewn on the shoulder.
CHP officials say the Kia’s speed was a factor, though they did not give an estimate of how fast it was going.
The fatal crash is still under investigation.
