Early Morning 2-Car Crash on 5 Freeway in National City Leaves One Dead
NATIONAL CITY, CA (January 11, 2020) – One person was killed following a two-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in National City, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash happened around 4:51 a.m. on northbound 5 Freeway, just north of Highway 54.
According to the CHP, a black Toyota Tacoma truck hit a parked black Jeep at the center divider on the northbound freeway. The impact caused the Jeep to overturn on its roof.
Arriving paramedics confirmed one fatality as a result of the crash. The identity of the victim was not immediately available pending next of kin notification.
The pickup truck driver ran away from the scene, according to reports.
Officials closed all lanes of northbound 5 Freeway until around 10:40 a.m. while they investigated the crash.
