One Man Killed, Another Injured in Los Gatos Crash on Highway 17 near Summit Road
LOS GATOS, CA (February 18, 2019) — An 84-year-old man died and an 85-year-old man was injured after a tree fell on their car on Thursday, February 14.
The two elderly men were moving northbound in a Cadillac on Highway 17 south of Summit Road when a tree fell around 3:30 p.m.
The tree collided with their car, causing a pileup of about 10 vehicles. Only the people in the Cadillac were harmed.
The driver, who lives in Aptos, sustained major injuries, according to CHP. The other man died.
The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death. A spokeswoman said Friday that officials had not yet confirmed his identity.
CHP investigated an earlier solo-car rollover incident on northbound Highway 17 before coming across the second incident involving multiple vehicles and a downed tree.
The two accidents closed lanes in both directions for hours, slowing the traffic on Highway 17. Authorities reopened all northbound lanes at around 7 p.m.
